I based this piece on a previous design I made about the red-cockaded woodpecker, which is an endangered species that is native to Oklahoma. When researching it last year, I came across an article about the extinction of the ivory-billed woodpecker, and it piqued my interest. I thought it would be more impactful if I created a piece about a species that was declared extinct last year. I started by blocking out the base shapes, then went in and added more detail. When shading, I didn’t like how it was turning out when I shaded with a darker version of the color beneath, so I tried using a rainbow of colors. I think it really helped the feathers feel iridescent and real.
